The first Tiger football game of the regular season is sure to be an exciting one, as the Tigers will face off against rival Emanuel County Institute, but there's a twist! The showdown will take place not in Tiger Stadium, their regular arena, but instead in GSU's Paulsen Stadium. Assistant Coach Isaac Ferrell explained that they have been working on thi sidea since the beginning of the year.
"This is an opportunity to get our students some exposure, while getting them pumped for the rest of the season," explained Ferrell. "This is a stadium where they have all watched Georgia Southern play, and now they get to play on that very same field themselves."
The game, scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 25, will be one of two high school football rivalry games to take place. Also playing will be Brunswick High School and Wayne County. The event has been named the "Erk Russell Classic," honoring the late GSU football coach, and Ferrell says that he hopes studenst, parents and all of the community will come to support the Tigers at Paulson.
"We want our kids to experience what it is like to play on a college field, and we strategically picked ECI so that our players and fans can get really excited about this game," said Ferrell.
For just $10, spectators will be able to watch both games, which are anticipated to be some of the best games of the season. Ferrell explained that the event is only anticipated to grow.
"Next year we are talking about a two day event with four high school games," he said.
Times for the games will be announced closer to game day. Tickets will be available at the high school and through GSU's ticket office.
